Hawley Ridge Apartments

Increasing access to affordable housing

The Impact

  • Multi-family affordable housing for the blind
  • 50 affordable housing units

Fostering independence for the blind and visually impaired.

The opportunity

For more than 80 years, Badger Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired has provided innovative community outreach and housing services to thousands of blind individuals, helping them overcome the prejudices visually impaired people often face as they struggle to become independent members of society.

With $1.9 million in financing provided by the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), Badger Association constructed the Hawley Ridge Apartments, an affordable housing facility for the blind. At Hawley Ridge, 50 of the property?s 58 units are reserved for families whose income is below the surrounding area?s Median Family Income.

The need

Seeking liquidity to generate larger community impact and fund additional projects?like Hawley Ridge Apartments?WHEDA turned to CRF.

The help

By selling its loan portfolio to CRF, WHEDA was able to recapitalize its loan fund, giving it the capacity to fund additional projects and, ultimately, generate greater impact in its community.

The community

Hawley Ridge Apartments offers tenants a supportive community with social and recreational activities, support groups, and mail reading; it is also linked to the Badger Association administration building, where tenants have convenient access to an audio/Braille library, rehabilitation services, a referral/transition program, and technology/computer training. While Badger Association?s center gives blind individuals essential support, it also empowers them to live independent lives unencumbered by their disability.
